I say this is a beginner pattern because it's very simple and has a lot of straight lines, but you will need a bit of basic knowledge about how to use your machine and basic technical terms. So if you need a refresher course, go read up and then come back :)
You're going to need;
- A rectangle of soft fabric like felt or flannel 12"x24" (or any custom size)
- A rectangle of your patterned accent fabric with an inch seam allowance all the way around so 14"x26" (or your custom size with seam allowances)
- swatch of your patterned fabric approx 4"x8"
- pins
- sewing machine and matching thread
- Velcro square (or other fastener)
Launder and iron your accent fabric and lay it down right side down. Place your soft pad fabric on top in the center, and starting with a corner start folding your seam allowance in 1/2" and again so your hem is enclosed and pin. Continue all the way around until the entire pad is pinned. When you get to corners, my little trick to keep them clean is shown in photos below.
Start by folding your corner down.
Fold your hem up so the raw edges are touching your soft fabric.
Now fold your hem up and pin! You've got a nice clean enclosed corner!
Once you've pinned all your edges and corners, take your project to the sewing machine and it's time to sew!
Start on a corner, drop your needle and carefully remove the pin holding your corner down. Drop your presser foot and straight stitch down the side of your pad, removing pins as you go.Don't forget to back stitch.
When you get to your corner, to not mess up that pretty fold, before removing your pin, use the dial to hand stitch to the edge, drop your needle, lift the presser, and rotate 90* to start down the next side. Remove pin, drop presser and continue down the edge.
Once you've finished your entire edge, we're going to create the fastener. Take your swatch and fold the short ends in, and baste them down.
Next you will fold ench edge into the middle and then fold in half . Pin and top stitch down each side.
Now the fold
lines... This is optional but adds an extra finishing touch and makes
your pad easier to fold up and put away later. Fold your pad up to the
size you like and mark each fold with a pin on each side. I left a
little over hang for a flap.
Straight stitch across the pad pin to pin. A good trick since you don't have a guideline is to take a piece of tape and stick it to your project, then use the tape line as your guide!
Keep the tape away from your needle unless you want to be cleaning up a sticky gummy mess.
After you're done it should look something like this.
Remove the tape and move to the next pin marks and continue until you're done! Now your changing pad should fold up nicely every time!
Now it's time to attach your closure strap. Find the center of the top of your pad and pin one end of the strap there. Attach your closure by top stitching it to the pad.
Attach the Velcro with a top stitch all the way around.
Fold your pad up and mark the area where your Velcro will attach.
Top stitch to attach.
Fold it up and you're done! Easy! (A little time consuming... but easy!) Now you've got such a cute little gift to give at your next baby shower! Or you could always just buy one from me! Haha :)
