Starting to Crawl and Baby-Proofing our small space

So, last week the baby started moving. A lot. I mean like one second she's there and then next she's under the coffee table. She doesn't really know how to crawl yet, but she's on her way. Right now she lays on her back, scoots with her legs and booty, and rolls over to change direction. It doesn't sound like much, but trust me, she can get where she needs to be with little to no help.
She's been getting into pretty much everything there is to get into; grabbing cords, picking up carpet fuzz, stretching to reach her wipes, creams and even her changing pad. It's hard for us to totally "baby -proof" our house, because like most people today, we live in a small compact space, and free real estate around here is hard to come by.

Right now we're getting by with placing things 6+ inches off the floor, but soon the baby will be able to pull herself up and we're going to need a more permanent solution. I've started by just giving her as much floor space and activities to keep her busy and out of everything forbidden, but I know this won't last long.

Because we live in just under 1000sqft, baby proofing and organizing go hand and hand. Translation: We don't have the room for extra (and expensive!) gadgets to spare! Some of the things we've been using in our house that work are:

• Our Graco Pack'n'Play has been a lifesaver (and you can find them really cheap - last seasons patterns and styles go on sale regularly!) and keeps us from having to put up baby gates everywhere (which are a pain in the butt to have to climb over, let's be honest). 
• Wrapping cords up and securing with a twisty tie, or a rubber band - both of which come FREE! with the purchase of most groceries (save those bread clips, veggie bands and bag twisties for the future!)
• Baskets/Boxes for storing smaller items together on a shelf out of the way or stored in the garage (if you have one). Diaper boxes are great for this. I've been taking all our outgrown baby clothes and putting them in 0-3, 3-6, and so on, labeling them and putting them in the garage for the future (if not another baby, maybe a cute quilt!) Costco or Sam's Club is a great place to get boxes for free too!
• Keep baby busy! I think this is probably the best tip of all. Toys, activity gyms, and anything else your baby loves. A busy baby is a baby who isn't bored and trying to get into everything. It's the harder option, but if you have the time and patience it works really well.
